When Crypto.com Chain was launched, the company needed a currency to be able to use natively for its internal financial services, commercial and payment methods for all its users. It therefore launched Crypto.com Coin, fully designed to be used internally and as the internal commission payment for its alternative Pay platform. Kris Marszalek, Rafael Melo, Gary Or and Bobby Bao, when they launched their exchange Crypto.com, had the idea of launching their own cryptocurrency to support trading within the platform. 2 years later, at an event with Rafael Melo and Bobby Bao, they launched Crypto.com Coin.
In February 2022, Crypto.com Coin changed its name to Cronos (CRO), because the company needed a new name to reflect its decentralized nature and recognizing the growth the cryptocurrency has had over the years.
